SHELBY: Violet T. Melton, lovingly known as "Violet," made her final homecoming on July 16, 2025, in Shelby, North Carolina, at the age of 82. Born in Cleveland County on May 15, 1943, she graced this world with her generous spirit, warm smile, and open heart.
Violet's life was deeply enriched by her love for family, friends, and community. She found immense joy in crocheting, baking, crafting, and, especially, in making Christmas candy every year to share with all who knew her. Her talents and passions drew loved ones together, creating cherished memories that will be treasured for generations.
A devout Christian, Violet was a dedicated member of Gantts Grove Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and eagerly participated in any church activities that needed her helping hands. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing guidance and comfort throughout her days.
Violet was the beloved wife of the late Robert Melton, with whom she shared 47 wonderful years. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Flay and Reba Terry, her son Joey Melton, her daughter Sonja Vandervort, her grandson Paul Melton, and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her loving son Joel Melton and his wife Doris; her cherished sisters Martha Jane Evans and Barbra Ann McCraw; her brother Max Terry; and her beloved grandchildren Bridget Hinds (Justin), Josh Melton (Athena), Nikki Hartman (George), Kayce Armour (Justin), and Hayden "Bubba" Vandervort (Kylie). Her legacy lives on in her dear great-grandchildren Chelsey Melton, Marley Atkins, Keegan Hinds, Dougie Melton, Jaxson Hinds, Tesla Hartman, Josie Vandervort, and Lyndi Armour.
Known affectionately as "Mama" and "MawMaw," Violet was the best storyteller and was lovingly referred to as "Aunt Violet" by many of her nieces and nephews. Her stories and laughter will echo in our hearts always.
Funeral services to celebrate Violet's remarkable life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Robert Lane. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Burial will follow at Gantts Grove Baptist Church, where Violet will find her final resting place with her husband and her beloved children.
Violet T. Melton will be profoundly missed but forever remembered for her kindness, generosity, and the light she brought into our lives,.
