SHELBY- Tommy Ray Pruett Sr., a man of unwavering dedication and kindness, passed away on February 10, 2026, in Shelby, North Carolina, at the age of 79. Born on September 27, 1946, in Cleveland County, NC, Thomas lived a life that inspired those around him with his gentle spirit and love for sports and education.

For over 30 years, Tommy dedicated himself to the noble profession of teaching. He spent 25 of those years at Burns High School, where he served as a beloved physical education teacher and coach. His passion for sports was evident in every aspect of his life, whether he was coaching football, baseball, or girls' basketball, or simply enjoying the thrill of a game as a spectator. In his time as the head coach for the girls basketball team, he had 353 victories making him the most winningest coach in Burns High history. During his tenure, he also guided the Burns baseball team to over 100 victories making him the first coach in Cleveland County to do so and served as an assistant football coach, including on the 1994 3A state championship team. In 2001, he led Blacksburg High School to a regional baseball championship. His love for diving and participating in various sports left a lasting impression on his students and colleagues alike, instilling in them the values of teamwork, perseverance, and joy.

Tommy was more than an educator and coach; he was a loving father, brother, and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Julia Pruett, who undoubtedly shaped the caring and compassionate man he became. He is survived by his sons, Rodney Pruett and wife Lori, Thomas Pruett and Lori, and Ryan Pruett and wife Taylor, who carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength. His brothers, James Pruett and Larry Pruett and wife Pamela, will cherish memories of their shared childhood and lifelong bond.

The light of Tommy’s life extended to his ten grandchildren—Jagger, Ava, Blake, Sydney, Drew, Hadonn, Paxton, Lily, Jurnee, and Dalton—who were his pride and joy. His nieces, Kimberly, Stacy, and Lauren, and nephews, John and Joseph, along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, will forever hold his memory in their hearts. Tommy also leaves behind the mother of his children, Judy Pruett, who he remained life long friends with.

Tommy’s life was a testament to the power of gentle strength and enduring love. Though he no longer walks among us, his spirit lives on through the countless lives he touched. A gathering of family and friends to reflect on the legacy of an inspiring man who led a life full of purpose and compassion will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026 from 11:00AM to 12:00PM at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. Burial will be private to the family.

Those wishing to honor Tommy's memory are encouraged to continue his legacy of kindness and support of youth athletics and education in their own communities. His life was a game well-played, and his memory will serve as an inspiration for generations to come.
