LAWNDALE- Stephen Francis Durbin decided to shift gears one last time on May 31, 2026, surrounded by his family—his best audience for his legendary storytelling. Born on December 17, 1949, in Shelby, NC, he exited the world at the age of 76, having spent every moment ensuring there was laughter wherever he went.
Stephen's life was a testament to hard work and dedication. For an impressive 58 years, he worked as a truck driver, a role that took him across the country, allowed him to meet countless people, and complete more miles than a Ford wished it could. His career path also included serving in the fire department, where he committed himself to protecting and serving his community before retiring.
A man of varied interests, Stephen had a passion for NASCAR, fishing, and dirt track racing. He found immense joy in telling stories, especially about the old times, his beloved grandkids, and the mountains he adored, particularly Pigeon Forge. Known for his humorous anecdotes and profound wisdom, Stephen never met a stranger. When asked how he was doing, he was fond of saying he was "Fat and Sassy," spreading joy to all who encountered him. One of his favorite quotes was, "Be good or be good at it and then name it after me," leaving behind a legacy of wit and positivity. A faithful member of Friendship Methodist Church in Fallston, Stephen was a man of deep-rooted faith, drawing strength and fellowship from his church community.
Stephen was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Silias and Kimmie Durbin, his cherished wife of 53 years, Marie Durbin, and his grandson, Sam Newton. He is survived by his daughters, Tammy Wright husband Danny and Doloris Newton husband Michael; sons, Lee Durbin wife Lisa and Kenneth Durbin; and his adopted children, Ashley England, Crystal Hedspeth, and Mike Hedspeth. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Richie, Wes, Tommy, Brandon, Gracie, Noah, Hayley, Chris, Crystal, Madson, Cody, and Zerie, as well as several great-grandchildren. Stephen also leaves behind his dear sister, Linnie Bell, numerous nieces and nephews, special friend Sharon Jill, and his devoted truck driving and firefighter buddies.
Services will unfold just as Stephen would have wanted: full of love and laughter. Join us to honor him with a memorial service at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Friendship Methodist Church in Fallston, expertly guided by Pastor Wes Brown. Friends and family are invited to gather in fellowship on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. The family will be gathered at the home of Tammy Wright for those wanting to pay their condolences to the family.
Though Stephen has left this world, his lasting impact remains. He always said he loved you, and those words echo in the hearts of all who cherished him.
