KINGS MOUNTAIN- Russell "Rusty" Stephen Ropp, 60, of Cleveland Co., NC, played his final hand on May 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Always one to keep life colorful, Rusty was irreplaceably witty, stubborn as an ox, and passionate about the things he loved most: family, fish tanks, and freshly cut grass. Rumor has it that Rusty single-handedly kept Two Kings Casino thriving; we're fairly certain he helped fund its construction.
Rusty found joy in the simple pleasures of life and sought adventure from an early age. In his younger years, he stepped into the wrestling ring, bringing courage and determination to every match. His passion wasn’t limited to wrestling; he cultivated beauty within his salt water fish tanks, creating aquatic masterpieces that dazzled and inspired.
Despite his spirited adventures, Rusty’s greatest love and source of pride was his family. Above all, his grandchildren were the stars of his universe: Oaklyn, Nellie, and Emery brought endless joy and wonder to his heart.
A man of simple pleasures but grand principles was preceded in death by his father, Randy Stephen Ropp; his mother, Charlotte Davis Smith; his son, Brandon Ropp; and step-father, Bobby Smith. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Mary; his sons, Austin Ropp and wife Taylor, Cutter Foulk, and Chance Foulk; his sister, Kim Childers and husband Chris; and his brothers, Richard Ropp and wife Tracy, and Patrick Smith and wife Julie. Rusty also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom carry a piece of his legacy forward.
A memorial service to celebrate Rusty’s life will be held at 12:00PM on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with Pastor Allen Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Rusty lived his life with a determined spirit and a heart brimming with love. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the fortune to know him.
