SHELBY- Muriel D. Mills, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, in Shelby, NC, at the age of 87. Born on February 20, 1939, in Kings Mountain, NC, Muriel lived a life full of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to those she held dear.
Muriel dedicated her career to nurturing young minds as a teacher at Lattimore Elementary and later at Boiling Springs Elementary until her retirement in 2004. Teaching was not just a profession for Muriel; it was her passion. She loved being a teacher both in the classroom and in life, where she enriched countless lives with her wisdom and care.
Her resilient, consistent, and kind nature endeared her to all who knew her. She possessed a sassy spirit that added a special charm to her personality, always providing warmth and joy to those around her. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Muriel found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid knitter, crafting beautiful baby hats for preemies every year—a testament to her caring heart. Her love for gardening displayed her ability to nurture growth in every aspect of life.
Muriel and her wanderlust took her traveling across the globe and the beautiful landscapes of the United States. Back home, she was an active member of Crestview Baptist Church, where her faith and fellowship were constants throughout her life.
Her true pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure. In their laughter and accomplishments, she found the greatest fulfillment.
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, Boyce W. Davis and Maude D. Davis, her husband Sammy E. Mills, her sister Nina Davis, and her brother Roe "Red" Davis. She leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories to her surviving family: her son Britt Mills and his wife Monica, her daughter Haley Allen and her husband Howard, and her grandchildren Tyler Allen and wife Stephanie, Erik Allen and wife Sara, and Lauren Croft and husband Luke. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Cooper Allen, Emma Allen, Sadie Ivey, and Charlotte Allen.
A celebration of Muriel’s remarkable life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Crestview Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Jeremy McSwain. Friends and family are invited to gather one hour prior to the service to share memories and offer condolences. A private burial will take place before the service.
Muriel D. Mills will forever be remembered for her loving spirit, her commitment to teaching and caring for others, and her ability to find beauty and joy in the world around her. Her life was an inspiring journey, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.
