LINCOLNTON- Marvin Boyd Smith was 91 years old, and a Veteran of the United States Army. He was a man of few words whose pastimes showcased his true nature. He never felt the need to fill the silence, finding comfort in quiet reflection. An avid golfer, he spent many days on the greens, where he found peace and contentment. His love for woodworking saw him transform simple pieces of wood into beautiful creations, while his fascination with puzzles and painting landscapes revealed a mind that never ceased to explore and create.
He was a man of many talents, which included working on his own cars and lawn mowers, and even cutting his own grass just days before his passing. Marvin's love for the beach and fishing spoke of a soul deeply connected with nature and the simple pleasures of life. And, of course, he never missed an opportunity to enjoy a good Western film.
Above all, Marvin knew the importance of family and never missed an event or holiday. He leaves behind his daughters, Tammie Sexton and husband Tim, Evelyn "Kay" Stamey and husband Bo, Betty Jo Towery and husband Mark, and Linda Burnham and husband Kevin. His legacy continues through his treasured grandchildren, Michael Lee and wife Deana, Christopher Sexton and wife Leah, Jamie Sexton, Hannah Bridges and husband Wil, Savannah Finger, Madison Finger, and Lucas Burnham and wife Kimberly, as well as his adored great-grandchildren, James Lee, Thomas Lee, Reagan Bridges, Ella Bridges, and Creed Bridges and beloved sister, Pat Avery,
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, James and Evelyn Smith, his stepmother Edna Smith, his granddaughter, Heather Wallace, and his brothers and sisters, who he now joins in eternal rest.
A funeral service celebrating Marvin's life will be held at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home in Shelby, NC on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The visitation will be at 10:30 AM and service at 11:30 AM with Pastor Terry Floyd officiating. He will be laid to rest at Cleveland Memorial Park in Shelby, NC.
Marvin was a man with quiet strength, perfectly at peace with a simple, tranquil life. As we bid farewell, we remember him fondly and hold his memory close in our hearts.
