SHELBY- Louise Whitaker Raines, aged 98, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, surrounded by her family in Shelby, the same community where she was born on September 4, 1927. A beacon of warmth and kindness, Louise lived a life steeped in love, laughter, and faith.
A devoted member and charter member of Westview Baptist Church, Louise's unwavering faith guided her through life's many seasons. She possessed a pure-hearted spirit, one that was trusting to a fault, making her the perfect target for playful pranks—most often shared in giggles with her beloved sisters.
Louise found joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid reader and enthusiast of "Search A Word" puzzles, she delighted in the quiet solitude of her thoughts. Her heart, however, belonged to the Atlanta Braves, as she was an adamant follower who cheered them on with fervor. In the kitchen, Louise was a culinary artist best known for her legendary chocolate pies, a treat cherished at every family gathering.
Travel was another adventure Louise embraced wholeheartedly, exploring new places with her late husband, Charles W. Raines Sr., whom she has now joined in eternity. Together, they cultivated a rich tapestry of memories, weaving in laughter, love, and learning at every destination.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Mamie Whitaker; step-mother, Zula Allen Whitaker; her husband, Charles W. Raines Sr.; sisters, Dora Hendrick, Margaret Weathers, and Lorene Price; son-in-law, Eddie Benfield; and great-grandchildren, Sadie Raines and Kohen Price.
Her legacy lives on through her children, Charles W. Raines Jr. and his wife Beverly of Shelby, and Kathy Raines Benfield Fisher and her husband David of Iron Station. She leaves behind a devoted group of grandchildren: Jason Benfield and wife Nicole of Boiling Springs, David Benfield of Dallas, Matthew Raines and wife Juliegh of Waco, Katie Rigley and husband Tanner of Charlotte, Josh Shuford of Shelby, Tessa Price and husband Skylur of Shelby, and Charlie Fisher and wife Jennifer of Concord. Her memory will also be cherished by her great-grandchildren: Jacob, Owen, and Noah Benfield; Jackson, Sawyer, and Cooper Raines; and Joel Fisher.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Shelby Manor who lovingly took care of her for 7 years and to Hospice as they also lovingly guided us through her final days.
A graveside service to honor the life of Louise will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at Cleveland Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Rick Bowling officiating.
Louise's life was a testament to grace, and her gentle spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will forever illuminate the lives of her family and friends, reminding us to live fully, laugh heartily, and love deeply.
