SHELBY: Leonard Howard Gibson, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025, at the age of 82. Born and raised in Shelby, North Carolina, Leonard lived a life that inspired all who knew him with his unyielding devotion, hard work, and kindness.
A lifelong member of New Hope Baptist Church, Leonard's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. He carried this faith into everything he did, whether it was through his 38 years as a dedicated truck driver—25 of which were spent with Overnite Transportation in Gaffney, SC—or his passion for farming and old tractors. Leonard found joy in the simple pleasures of life, from camping under the stars to attending cow sales, always with a heart full of gratitude.
Leonard was a man of wisdom and love, qualities that made him an excellent husband to Jeanette Gibson, his beloved wife of 62 years. Together, they built a family that was a testament to their enduring bond. Leonard's organizational skills and determination ensured that his household ran smoothly and his family was always cared for.
Preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Hartness Gibson and Lucille Bridges Gibson, his in-laws, Jack and Kate Floyd, and his special companion, Rowdy the dog, Leonard leaves behind a family that is united in love and gratitude for the remarkable man he was.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, James Gibson and wife Sherry of Shelby, David Gibson and wife Windy of Shelby, and Matt Gibson and wife Lori of Cherryville, each of whom inherited his steadfastness and love for family. His sister, Sandra Blanton of Lexington, VA, and brother, John Gibson of Clayton, remember him as a caring sibling who was always ready with a helping hand or a wise word.
Leonard was a proud grandfather to Jeremy Gibson and wife Samantha of Shelby, Kirstin Gibson of Mount Holly, Chesney Gibson of Shelby, and Daevan Gibson of Shelby. His great-grandchildren, Coraleigh "Cora" Gibson and Preston Gibson, will carry forward his legacy of love and strength.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Leonard's life at the funeral services scheduled for 3:00 PM on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Following the service, Leonard will be laid to rest at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, a place close to his heart.
Leonard Gibson touched many lives with his wise words, loving care, and unwavering dedication. He was a good friend, a great father and grandfather, and above all, an inspiration to those fortunate enough to know him. His memory will forever be a guiding light for his family and friends.
