SHELBY: Larry J. Porter, gracefully exited the carousel of life on July 3, 2025 at the age of 79. Born on March 22, 1946, Larry was a native of Cleveland County and the son of the late JB and Annis Porter.
Larry's professional escapades took off at Kate’s Skating Rink where he spent a decade from the mid-80s to the mid-90s teaching people the art of graceful falls and less-than-graceful pirouettes. His passion, however, was Big L's Amusements—a venture that began with a sprinkle of magic from his beloved granddaughter Melinda and lasted an impressive 30 years, which he was still managing till his death. He brought joy and laughter to countless events, proving that the secret to happiness is indeed all fun and games.
Larry had a soft spot for special needs kids, making sure their events were extra special. Generous to a fault, robust in character, and with a knack for planning, Larry wore many hats: brother, father, grandfather, husband, father-in-law, and one outstanding brother-in-law. His legacy is one of laughter, great planning, and a life lived with immense love.
Larry joins a family reunion up above with his parents, Joe "JB" Benson Porter and Annis Isler Porter; his brother, Keith Porter; and his dearly cherished granddaughter, Melinda Mathes. They’re probably already organizing the next big event up there.
Those left to remember his booming voice and larger-than-life presence are his wife of 59 years, Brenda Porter; his daughter, Cindy Mathes and her husband Eddie of Monroe; his brother, Roger Porter and his wife Jackie of Shelby; grandchildren Zell, Kelly, and Mikel Mathes; and great-grandchildren Madilyn, Mackenna, Melah, and Ezra. Let's not forget his nieces, Halie Ruppe and Sarah Way; nephew, John Porter; and sister-in-law, Betty Porter.
Join us in celebrating Larry’s life at 3:00PM Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Carper officiating. Bring your best Larry tales—everyone will gather to reminisce one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A private family burial will follow, where no doubt endless stories will keep Larry’s spirit as lively as ever.
