MOORESBORO: Chris Cross, favorite only sister, aunt, cousin, and dear friend, passed away September 7 at home surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by and served as caregiver for her parents, George Emory Chatham and Nell Morehead Chatham, her brother George Moody Chatham, and her beloved pup Ray-Ray.
With a love for hospitality and fellowship, Chris filled countless lives with warmth, joy, and fun, while nurturing bonds that extended well beyond family. Chris took pride in being the big sister to her beloved twin brothers George and Geoff. She will be remembered for her faith-filled advice, her quick wit, and her gift for making everyone feel valued. Whether traveling the world, visiting with friends and family, offering words of encouragement, or sharing stories that lifted spirits, Chris exemplified compassion in all she did including teaching her beloved students. Her home, more specifically her porch, was a place where friends and relatives alike found laughter, comfort, and belonging.
In addition to her family, Chris was deeply woven into the fabric of her community. While living in Tennessee, she joined the Christian service order Daughters of the King. She taught for over 20 years in the TN school districts of Kingsport, Pikeville, Oak Ridge, and Crossville including chaperoning her high school students on a trip to Spain. After returning to NC, Chris taught at Shelby High School, renewed her activity with Daughters of the American Revolution, served as Clerk on Mooresboro Town Council, and enjoyed her time participating in worship and bible study at Sandy Run Baptist Church. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched with her joie de vivre and her boundless love.
Chris is survived by her brother Geoff (Betty) Chatham of Carolina Shores, NC, her nieces Paige (Tim) Youmans of Columbia, SC, and Carrie (Andrew) Davis of Isle of Palms, SC, and nephews from Scottsdale AZ: Nick (Jessica) Chatham and Chris (Spenser) Chatham, and several great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many dear cousins, extended family members, and long-time family friends. The family would like to offer their sincere gratitude to the many neighbors and church members who helped Chris throughout the years and a warm embrace of thanks to the newest additions to Chris’ circle, Fannie and Verna, her trusted and gentle caretakers.
Visitation will be held at 1pm on September 11 at Sandy Run Baptist Church in Mooresboro with funeral service at 2pm and graveside prayers to follow. Friends and loved ones are invited to gather in celebration of her life and the joy she brought to others.
