SHELBY-Betty Philbeck McFarland, a cherished friend, loving mother, devoted grandmother, and great-grandmother, entered eternal rest on March 10, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on April 24, 1940, in Cleveland County, she spent her final days surrounded by loved ones in Shelby, North Carolina.
Betty was a lifelong member of New Buffalo Baptist Church, where her faith and dedication inspired those around her. Her warm presence and unwavering devotion to her family and community were hallmarks of her life.
In her kitchen, Betty found joy and fulfillment through cooking and baking. Known far and wide for her famous fried apple pies, her culinary talents brought comfort and happiness to countless family gatherings. Her passion for collecting vintage glassware reflected her appreciation for beauty and history, as she treasured each piece as a connection to the past.
Traveling with her late husband, James Edward McFarland, was one of her greatest joys. Together, they explored new places and created memories that would last a lifetime. Betty’s generosity extended beyond her familial circles, as she dedicated time and energy volunteering at the Hospice Store, providing support and kindness to those in need.
Betty is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Arnold and Alice Philbeck; her husband, James Edward McFarland; her sisters, Francine Philbeck, Myrtle Owensby, Nancy Causby, and Birtha Yelton; and her brother, Robert Philbeck.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving family: her son, Tim McFarland; her daughters, Pam Bolton and husband David, Fredia Hawkins and husband Jeff, and Diane McIntyre with Bryon; brothers, Bobby Philbeck and Shirley, and Michael Philbeck; grandchildren, Kali Wright, Chrissy Holland, Emily Sturgill, Jonathan Herndon, Blake McFarland, Charley Lavender, Megan Black, Sarah Rathbun, Rebeca McIntyre, and Paige Gamble; 21 precious great-grandchildren; and her dear sister-in-laws, Louise Shook and husband John, and Pat Marion.
The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Betty’s life at a funeral service held at 12:00 PM on Friday, March 13, 2026, at New Buffalo Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Adam Green. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Betty will be laid to rest in the church cemetery, beside her husband.
Betty Philbeck McFarland’s spirit of love, warmth, and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family wants to thank Shelby Manor for the love and compassion they have shown her in her time there.
