SHELBY- Ann Wakefield Young, born on April 4, 1950, in Burke County, passed away peacefully at her home in Shelby, surrounded by her beloved family on February 25, 2026, at the age of 75.
Ann was a beacon of joy and inspiration to all who knew her. Her melodious voice often filled the sanctuary of Patterson Springs Baptist Church, where she was a cherished member and faithful Sunday School teacher. Many believed she could have taken center stage with her beautiful voice, but she chose instead to share her gift with her community, sharing Jesus' love through music and service.
Her love for gardening was renowned; her home was ever-blooming with vibrant flowers, reflecting her lively and colorful personality. Ann was an ardent advocate for the Deaf community, a passion ignited when her daughter lost her hearing at the tender age of three. She embraced this role with love and tenacity, making a difference in countless lives.
Her deep love for her grandchildren was unwavering, filling their lives with warmth and wisdom. Ann found delight in shopping, especially at Belk, where she often found treasures that brought smiles to her family and friends. Animals held a special place in her heart, particularly her fur grandbabies, whom she adored as if they were her own.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helen Wakefield, whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Lewis C. Young, her daughters, Kimberly Ann Hendrix and husband Jamie and Amy McCurry and husband Larry; her precious grandchildren, Colton Bowman, Canaan Hendrix, Morgan McCurry, Sage McCurry, and Silas McCurry; her sister, Betty Grainger and husband Wade, her brothers Bill Wakefield and Dan Wakefield; her in-laws, Billy and Shelley Greene, brother-in-law Dayton McClellan; her sister-in-law, Sue Young, alongside numerous adored nieces and nephews.
Ann was a true lady, known for her outgoing and friendly demeanor, her genuine love for her family, and her steadfast faith. She touched the hearts of everyone around her with kindness and grace, leaving a legacy of love and compassion.
A graveside service will be held to celebrate Ann's life at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Patterson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, with Pastor Steve Waters and Pastor Chad Grigg officiating.
Ann Young’s spirit will forever illuminate the hearts of those she left behind, inspiring them to live with the same love and devotion she epitomized throughout her wonderful life.
