GROVER- Alton Lee Vess, fondly known as Alton, passed from this life leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom. He was a skilled craftsman and a generous soul. Alton’s talents spanned from the kitchen to the garage, and he had a remarkable ability to fix anything. His hands and mind were never idle. He was a “go-to” person for anyone needing a helping hand, always putting the needs of others before his own. Alton gave everything and expected nothing.
Ever curious, Alton could often be found absorbed in the History Channel or the Discovery Channel, expanding his already vast knowledge. He had an incredible gift for storytelling, with a knack for infusing dry wit with everyday stories. He was able to recall every detail with vivid clarity, whether it was related to history, how something worked, or the endless experiences over his lifetime.
Alton was a man of faith, having been a former member of Second Baptist Church in Shelby. His devotion to the Lord was evident in the way he lived his life, full of kindness and integrity.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ella Vess; brothers, Dewitt, Bobby, Worth, Bill, and Charlie Vess; and sisters, Ethel Patterson, Sue Washburn, and Margaret Vess.
Alton leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years, Judy Vess; his son, Brian Vess; and his daughter, Gina Vess McLean and her husband Damon. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth Hamrick, Betty Warren, and Jeanette Bridges and her husband Max; his brother, Jack Vess; and his cherished grandchildren, Maddie, Kate, and Sophia. Numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews also mourn his passing, along with countless friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00AM Tuesday May 6,2025 at Patterson Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Barry Goodman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the cemetery.
